About Me
Here is a post I made for the Snowflake Challenge (January 2025) that gives a bit of information about myself and my current fandoms.

Blog Content
I'm a pretty sporadic poster, but when I do blog it's mostly vid recs (for the Fannish Fifty Challenge) with an occasional post about my real life. Most fandom related posts are unlocked, while real life updates and more personal fandom posts are friend-locked. Please note, I am very much a "ship and let ship," "don't like, don't read," and kinktomato (YKINMKATOK - Your Kink Is Not My Kink (And That's OK)) sort of person and do not think that fictional preferences are indicative of real life morals, values, and behaviors.

Comments
Comments are always welcome on any post, whether you are a subscriber/friend or not! I would love to hear your thoughts on anything I have written.

Subscribing and Access Requests
Feel free to subscribe and request access. I'm not particularly active, but if you would still like to become friends, comment on this post and let me know! Comments on this post are screened.

Prompt: Update your fandom information.

I still need to update some various information across a few profiles, but in the meantime here's an updated "About Me" post. This template was copied from [personal profile] chacusha and modified a bit to suit my needs.

Basics: Neptune / they/them / East Coast USA / mid-30s.
Fandoms: Star Trek has been my main fandom for the past few years, and I expect this to remain true for the foreseeable future. Quark/Odo (Quodo) weaseled its way into my psyche in March 2023 and is still my obsessive OTP at this time. Kirk/Spock has been my evergreen OTP since 2009. I also love Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. (I eventually made my peace with the final season of GOT.) Other fandoms I dabble in and/or periodically fall in and out of are Arcane, Interview with the Vampire, Berserk, Thoroughbreds, The Locked Tomb, Person of Interest, Rick and Morty, Re-Animator 1 & 2 (I really did not like Beyond Re-Animator), and Sherlock BBC.
Other things I love but don't generally seek out fandom for: What We Do in the Shadows (TV) and The Munsters (these are my feel good shows), The Hunger Games (books and movies), and Black Sails.
Fanwork media: As in my real life, I'm a bit of a dabbler in everything. Fanfiction is my main medium, but I also create fanvids, graphics, and fanart.
Other hobbies/interests: I sporadically take yoga, dance, and aerial classes. I've spent the last few years researching special effects makeup and prosthetics and really want to give them a try, but keep getting waylaid from actually acquiring the materials I need to start. I love to go to conventions, especially conventions centered around Star Trek.
I mostly blog about: To be completely honest I don't post very much, but when I do it's mostly vid recs (for the Fannish Fifty Challenge I've been working on for *cough* three years *cough*) with an occasional post about my real life. Most fandom related posts are unlocked, while real life updates and more personal fandom posts are friends-locked.
Please note, I am very much a "ship and let ship," "don't like, don't read," and kinktomato (YKINMKATOK - Your Kink Is Not My Kink (And That's OK)) sort of person and do not think that fictional preferences are indicative of real life morals, values, and behaviors.

In honor of New Year’s Eve, here are two vids of Star Trek characters partying a little too hard!

Last Friday Night by MsSjeki
Star Trek: DS9 | Gen | 3:49 | PG
Music: Last Friday Night by Katy Perry

This is a super fun feel-good vid showcasing some of the wilder moments in DS9. I love the vidder’s choice to use screenshots as “pictures” over the lyrics Pictures of last night ended up online, I'm screwed, as well as Sisko’s little head shrug over “oh well,” lol. There are so many cute moments with all the characters in this vid that it makes me smile every time I watch it.

Tik Tok by MissSheenie
Star Trek: TOS | Gen | 2:30 | PG
Music: Tik Tok by Ke$ha

This is a classic with enough pop culture clout Ke$ha referenced it on Twitter/X. I love the vidder’s choice of clips and the use of splitscreen to add to the chaos and create the effect of a lot of drinking. I love this vid and still think about it after all these years!

Woohoo! I did it! I reached ten Fannish Fifty posts by the end of 2024! The goal is to do ten to twelve in 2025 (or more, but let’s be reasonable lol). At this rate it’ll take me six to ten years to finish fifty posts, but oh well lol. Progress is progress!

I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe New Year!
tribble_of_tarth: (GOT - I Am No Lady)
Note: Video contains major spoilers for Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth.

Make Up Your Mind by Cadence Lewis
The Locked Tomb | Gideon/Harrowhark | 4:12 | PG-13 (CW: Violence, blood, suicidal imagery, death.)
Music: Make Up Your Mind by Florence + the Machine

I recently discovered Locked Tomb animatics, and this one in particular has a special place in my heart. The animation is so so good (I can't imagine how long something like this must take!), and the animator captures Gideon's expressions beautifully. I also adore the song choice for Gideon and Harrow:

Make up your mind
Let me leave or let me love you

Is this line them or what?! 😭 It is such a treat to see the Locked Tomb translated into a visual medium, and this artist does an outstanding job across the board. (They also created two more Locked Tomb animatics that can be found here and here.)
tribble_of_tarth: (Arcane - Still Sisters)
Note: Video contains spoilers through the final episode of season 2.

Ma Meilleure Ennemie by zeruliaeps
Arcane: League of Legends | Jinx & Vi | 0:29 | PG
Music: Ma Meilleure Ennemie by Stromae and Pomme

I've been crying over this vid for 48 hours. 😭😭😭 I believe the song is meant for Ekko and Jinx, but it fits so well for Vi and Jinx as well. One particular section of the lyrics I love for them:

(Translated into English)
Why does hearing your name hurt me
When it hides right there in the vicinity?
What kind of emotion, is it hatred
Or pure sweetness when I hear your name?

(Full English translation of lyrics can be found here.)

The relationship between Vi and Jinx is one of my favorite parts of Arcane, and I love how this vid leans heavily into the angsty aspects of it. They may have difficulty understanding each other and their actions, but they will always still be sisters! (*blows nose*)

(Apologies for the gap between the video and the text. I messed around with the HTML for the better part of the afternoon and cannot for the life of me figure out why it's there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

New femslash ship just dropped, y'all!

Note: This is an extremely violent video. Please see notes below for content warning.

Taste by Sabrina Carpenter
3:18 | CW: Blood, gore, gun violence, impalement, view through impalement hole in body, dismemberment, eye trauma, violence against humans with various weapons (knives, chainsaws, etc.), human set on fire, strangling, character death. This is not an exhaustive list, but I did my best. Please use discretion when viewing.

While scrolling through Tumblr this morning, I saw several posts referencing this video and had to look it up instantly! As a fan of both Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega, I am so excited that they did a music video together and that it's super dark and femslashy! The video is full of references to various films (see Tumblr post below for side by side comparisons), which I think is super cool. I've watched the video several (many) times this morning and absolutely love it!

Here are a few of the posts I saw on Tumblr that I thought were interesting and cool:

02 - Fanart by snewok

Unfortunately, it is extremely common for packages to be stolen in my neighborhood. It happens often and quickly, with one instance of a package being stolen in the minute or less that elapsed between the delivery driver ringing the doorbell and me coming down the stairs from the third story to answer the door. (This was a wild incident, since I saw the man walking away with the package when I came to the door, and my knee-jerk reaction was to call out, "Hey! Did you get that box from over here?", but in the nicest, most customer service oriented voice I have. He turned around and looked so guilty and said no, but he very much had the air of a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar. A neighbor saw the whole incident and said the man had taken the package off my doorstep, so he dropped the package and walked off, and I was able to retrieve it.)

Most of the time the entire box is taken (which seems to me to be easiest and makes the most sense), but sometimes they open the box on the doorstep in order to decide if the contents are worth stealing, then either leave the empty box or dismantled box with the item still inside based on the decision they make.

This morning, I found an opened package scattered across my doorstep. It had obviously been looked through and found wanting by a porch thief, and I was quite curious to find out what my partner had ordered that the thieves decided was not worth their time.

It was a 20th Anniversary Salad Fingers plush. 😆

I didn't take a picture of it on the porch, but I tried to re-create it inside to show my partner:

Image Below (CW: Salad Fingers' creepy (cute?) face lol)

I am so amused by the thought of someone opening the package, seeing Salad Fingers' face, being like, "Oh, hell no!", then dropping the package and fleeing. I got a good laugh out of it, and it was a great way to start the day.

Oh look, it's been six months since I said I planned to keep posting Fannish 50 recs, then failed to write a single rec post. Shocking! </sarcasm> Oh well, better late than never. And what a surprise, it's a Quark/Odo vid! Will the wonders never cease? 😜

I Love It When You Hate Me by OlicityFan1
Star Trek: DS9 | Quark/Odo | 2:26 | Video: G, Song: R (two F bombs)
Music: Love It When You Hate Me by Avril Lavigne ft. blackbear

This is one of the top, if not the top, Quodo vids I keep coming back to again and again. I love the song, and think it is a beautiful fit for Quark/Odo. The editing makes it seem like Quark is saying the bits of the song Avril sings and Odo is saying the bits blackbear sings, which creates a wonderful back and forth that is such a perfect reflection of Quark and Odo's relationship. The ending fits beautifully with the lyrics "I love it when you hate me," playing over Odo and Quark laughing together in sickbay at the end of "The Ascent." It's just too perfect. <3

My Dilemma - A Quark/Odo Fanmix

it's a love/hate relationship

I didn't set out to create an entirely pop playlist, but once I saw the form taking shape I definitely leaned into it. So, here you go: a pop Quodo playlist about how they hate love hate (I meant every word!) each other. Titles of songs are YouTube links.

Change Your Whole Pitch by Our Man Bashir
Star Trek: DS9 | Quark | 0:50 | PG13 (Entirely for language. See song title below for more info...)
Music: Broke Bitch by Tiny Meat Gang

Just found this gem and I can't quit laughing. The timing is excellent and the song choice gives me the giggles when considering the Ferengi, and it works very well. This will be caught in my head for a while now.

Lavender Haze by Little Dark Olive
Interview with the Vampire (2022) | Louis/Lestat | 3:21 | PG13
Music: Lavender Haze by Taylor Swift

This is a beautifully edited vid that I absolutely adore. This ship has a ton of angst and dysfunction (to put it mildly), but this vid focuses on the beauty and happiness in Louis and Lestat's relationship, as well as touching on happy family moments with Claudia. I'm quite partial to this particular song by Taylor Swift, and it creates a dreamy atmosphere for the vid. The vid is sweet, gives me warm fuzzy feelings, and I have watched it many times.

Call Me Maybe by OlicityFan1
Star Trek: DS9 | Quark/Odo | 1:00 | G
Music: Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepson

Since I posted a week ago, I have fallen head over heels for Quark/Odo. I did not expect this to happen, but here we are. As such, several Quark/Odo vids have been added to the Fannish Fifty pipeline. What did I say last week about loving vids with catchy poppy tunes? Well, here's another example. It's short, it's silly, but it's super cute and I love it.

Surprise! Despite my best efforts in creating a posting schedule, I have failed to keep to it. Oh well, such is life. But I do have the next installation of my Fannish Fifty: Fanvid Recs!

Holding Out For A Hero by BellberryCat
Star Trek: DS9 | Quark/Odo | 3:04 | PG, CW: Needles, injection
Music: Holding Out For A Hero by Emery

I am only seven episodes into Deep Space 9, but last night I felt it necessary to search for Quark/Odo vids. This is the only one I have found thus far, but my, is it wonderful! I am such a sucker for longing looks and a poppy tune, and this vid delivers. This is a vid I will watch again and again.
tribble_of_tarth: (ST TOS - Amok Turn Around)
It's here! My first Fannish Fifty post! And, I have decided on a theme: Fifty Fanvid Recs! I intended to make a graphic to help visually tie the posts together, but that has not happened. Perhaps in the future.

And the first rec is:

Done by ImaginarySanity
Star Trek: TOS/Movies | Kirk/Spock | 3:21 | PG
Music: I'm Done by The Pussycat Dolls

For my first rec I wanted to start with one of the first fanvids I fell in love with. Backstory: In December 2009, I was wrapping up a college quarter and needed to write a term paper I had procrastinated on starting that was now due the next day. Somehow, and I genuinely do not remember how, I discovered the existence of Kirk/Spock and, instead of writing the term paper, spent the night reading Kirk/Spock fanfic. I was obsessed. This was especially unusual as at this time I had never seen a TOS episode or film. It seems my forever OTP was calling out to me before I even knew to think of it! In the end, I spent the night reading fanfiction and had to write the term paper in an anxious rush between my statistics final at 8 AM and when the paper was due at 1 PM. Then I went home after my last final of the quarter and blissfully spent the entire night absorbed in Kirk/Spock media. And then another wonderful thing happened: I discovered fanvids! I had been reading fanfic off and on since I was in middle school, but fanvids were brand new to me, and I was absolutely beside myself. I spent the night in a rabbit hole on YouTube and went to bed at 7 AM the next day. (Thirteen years later, I realize this story reeks of undiagnosed ADHD. I laugh to myself about it, but that's not what this post is about.)

This is one of the fanvids I found that night, and it remains one of my favorite Kirk/Spock fanvids. The music is beautiful and the lyrics fit Spock so perfectly. I also love the manip at the end! (The YouTube information credits erikos for this.) I am also so pleased that the image quality holds up after fourteen years. Fourteen years! This vid is fourteen years old! It's amazing, and I love it, and I am so excited to show off one of the videos that got me into watching fanvids all those years ago.

My goal is to try to post a rec once a week and throw in two random posts somewhere throughout the year to complete the Fannish Fifty challenge. I even have a posting schedule drafted! I'm trying to mix it up a bit so there is a greater mix of fandoms and characters than the three to four ships most of my vid watching falls under, but honestly, there will probably be a lot from the same fandoms/ships. (Sorry, not sorry.) I am super excited for this though! Fingers crossed I manage to stay consistent, lol.

Last year I participated in [personal profile] summerofhorrorexchange and posted my first piece of fanfiction to AO3. This is the first piece of fanfiction I have completed in years, so this is another personal win in addition to posting my first piece of writing on AO3.

Prompt: In your own space, write a promo, manifesto, or primer, for your favorite character, ship, or fandom.

The Boulet Brothers' Dragula (2016)

Medium/Location: Reality TV series with four seasons and two spin-off seasons (Resurrection and Titans). Airs on Shudder, also available on AMC+.
Summary: (From IMDB) The Boulet Brothers host a reality series to reveal the world's next Dragula Supermonster. Each drag artist vies for the title and crown through a series of challenges to unveil their best drag, filth, horror, and glamour.
Content Warnings: This is a horror drag contest, so the costumes can occasionally be bloody, gory, and scary. Also, "filth" is one of the tenets of Dragula, so some costumes and performances reflect this. This can range from (fake) feces and vomit to artistic renderings of auto-erotic asphyxiation. Eliminations are referred to as "exterminations," and extermination challenges force contestants to face their fears. These challenges can include: being buried in a coffin with various bugs, eating various disgusting things (brains, blood, etc), being fed on by leeches, amongst other things. Each contestant that is "exterminated" has a death scene at the end of the episode that can include any number of content warnings depending on the theme. While the tone itself is not particularly scary, if you are often negatively affected by horror films, this show is likely not for you.
Why I Like It: (To be completely transparent, I have only seen seasons 1 and 4 thus far. Season 1 is a bit low quality, but season 4 is very polished. I'm not sure if this is the result of a slow transition to a higher budget over the seasons or if there is a drastic quality improvement between seasons somewhere.) This is essentially RuPaul's Drag Race meets Fear Factor meets a horror film. It is insane, and I love it! The drag costumes (especially in the later seasons) are phenomenal. The level of artistry astounds me. I love how creative the themes (Nosferatu Beach Party, anyone?) and contestants are. The 4th season (and possibly earlier ones, though not the 1st season) has a small narrative story at the beginning of each episode that is brought out again at the end of the episode when a contestant is "exterminated." The extermination challenges freak me out (in a good way) and are far more interesting than lip sync dance-offs and never-ending death drops. The show is also quite inclusive with drag king, non-binary, and cis women contestants. If you like drag and horror, I super recommend this!

Prompt: In your own space, update your fandom information!

I am going to copy my introductory post from Snowflake Challenge 2021 and update as needed.

Call me...

Neptune or Tribble. Neptune is the name I have adopted to use online at this time, but seeing as my user name begins with Tribble, it is completely understandable and acceptable to call me that as well.

A bit about my non-fannish life...

I am in my mid 30s, non-binary, and use they/them pronouns. (I secretly want to try xe/xem/xyr pronouns, but I don't have the confidence to ask others to use neo-pronouns, at least not in real life.) My partner and I have been together for eight years, and we moved halfway across the country (USA) together in 2018. Outside of my 9 to 5, I spend the majority of my time watching television and wandering about the internet. I majored in Digital Filmmaking in college a little over ten years ago, though I did not complete my degree. My heart still belongs to film and television and storytelling, and I dream occasionally that perhaps one day I will find my way back to creative filmmaking. I hope to be more active in 2023 and get back into old hobbies I have abandoned such as yoga, dance, and rollerblading.

A bit about my fannish life...

I have been involved in fandom in some shape or form for over 20 years. Harry Potter was my gateway fandom when I was around 11 or 12. (As well as NSYNC and Hanson, shhh.) I began reading fanfic and using roleplaying message boards (Do those still exist?) and was hooked. In college I got really, really into Star Trek (TOS and AOS) and Sherlock (BBC), which I consider to be my forever fandoms. Game of Thrones is another forever favorite, though I generally like to pretend the last season never happened. My profile contains a comprehensive list of fandoms and favorites, past and present. I am a professional fandom lurker (especially on Tumblr, though I got much better about reblogging posts in 2022). I love, love, love conventions. I try to go to as many as possible.

Things I'm super enthusiastic about...

I started watching Dragula several weeks ago and I am hooked! This may even lead to me attempting drag, but this remains to be seen. Our Flag Means Death and What We Do in the Shadows are my current favorite television shows, and have been for some time. (WWDITS especially, I love the show sooooooo much.) Kirk/Spock and Sherlock/John, are my longstanding OTPs. Stede/Ed is my current obsessive 'ship.

Coming in the (almost) last week of 2022 with a Spotify Wrapped/Reading in Review post! It’s still 2022, so it’s not technically late, but I did procrastinate writing this post for quite a while.

My Spotify Wrapped continued to be very fandom focused, though in a less obvious way this year. Most of my Top 10 songs were from an Our Flag Means Death playlist I made for myself in March, along with my favorite songs from the Arcane: League of Legends soundtrack. I also may need to start considering myself as a Taylor Swift fan as she was my #1 played artist for 2022 and my #2 played artist for 2021. I do like Taylor Swift, and consider myself a casual fan, but my listening preferences seem to indicate that I may like her music more than I originally thought, lol. Looking forward to seeing what fandom heavily influences my music listening for 2023!

I am quite excited to announce that I read actual books this year, in addition to fanfiction! For reference, I read one book in 2021 (Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir) and… I think I read perhaps one book in 2020 before the pandemic destroyed my mental health and I ceased to get much of anything done. But this year I read ten books! Ten! I’m so proud of myself! I realize this is a drop in the bucket compared to most (or all) of those on my friends list, but as a slow reader who has been trying to get back into the habit of reading, this is absolutely amazing and I am completely stoked!

The books I read this year are:

1. Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
2. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
3. Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh
4. Drowned Country by Emily Tesh
5. Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong
6. Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield
7. Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
8. Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
9. Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story by Anne Rice, Art and Adaptation by Ashley Marie Witter
10. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

I also read a decent amount of short stories from various online publications and collections, but I did not track these in any capacity. My reading goal was six books this year, and I think I will keep next year the same since several of the books above are quite short, a poetry collection, and a graphic novel, but I am secretly hoping for ten again. Here’s to hoping next year is as productive as this year!
