The Boulet Brothers' Dragula (2016)

Medium/Location: Reality TV series with four seasons and two spin-off seasons (Resurrection and Titans). Airs on Shudder, also available on AMC+.
Summary: (From IMDB) The Boulet Brothers host a reality series to reveal the world's next Dragula Supermonster. Each drag artist vies for the title and crown through a series of challenges to unveil their best drag, filth, horror, and glamour.
Content Warnings: This is a horror drag contest, so the costumes can occasionally be bloody, gory, and scary. Also, "filth" is one of the tenets of Dragula, so some costumes and performances reflect this. This can range from (fake) feces and vomit to artistic renderings of auto-erotic asphyxiation. Eliminations are referred to as "exterminations," and extermination challenges force contestants to face their fears. These challenges can include: being buried in a coffin with various bugs, eating various disgusting things (brains, blood, etc), being fed on by leeches, amongst other things. Each contestant that is "exterminated" has a death scene at the end of the episode that can include any number of content warnings depending on the theme. While the tone itself is not particularly scary, if you are often negatively affected by horror films, this show is likely not for you.
Why I Like It: (To be completely transparent, I have only seen seasons 1 and 4 thus far. Season 1 is a bit low quality, but season 4 is very polished. I'm not sure if this is the result of a slow transition to a higher budget over the seasons or if there is a drastic quality improvement between seasons somewhere.) This is essentially RuPaul's Drag Race meets Fear Factor meets a horror film. It is insane, and I love it! The drag costumes (especially in the later seasons) are phenomenal. The level of artistry astounds me. I love how creative the themes (Nosferatu Beach Party, anyone?) and contestants are. The 4th season (and possibly earlier ones, though not the 1st season) has a small narrative story at the beginning of each episode that is brought out again at the end of the episode when a contestant is "exterminated." The extermination challenges freak me out (in a good way) and are far more interesting than lip sync dance-offs and never-ending death drops. The show is also quite inclusive with drag king, non-binary, and cis women contestants. If you like drag and horror, I super recommend this!
